Mobile Phone: LG VU (AT&T)
By Les Brown of ProActivation® Coaching
I just turned in my Motorola Razr for an "upgrade." The poor Razr kept randomly going into 'vibrate only' mode so I never heard most of my incoming calls . . . but that's another issue. I chose the LG VU phone to replace it for a number of reasons. First of all, the price (it was on special for $49) because I don't use my cell phone all that often and don't really need a browser or email functionality. I checked out the iPhone to begin with, but with a $30 monthly upcharge for internet access: I don't think so. The sales person was trying to be helpful, but, after I burst his bubble about adding internet charges to my phone bill, he wasn't particularly helpful. I was about to walk out of the store when I noticed the $49 special flier on a table by the door. I had to ask to see it. Go figure. The LG VU (CU920) is a touchscreen phone (with TV reception . . . can't we escape the 'box' anywhere?) with all the features I wanted and WITHOUT the monthly pocket-pilfering. Of course, you can pay all sorts of extra monthly fees if that's what you want to do. For whatever reason, this phone speaks to me. I 'get' it. Maybe I'm just a graphical person, but getting around inside the features seems like second-nature. I love it because I understand it. It's intuitive. Even with the Razr, after studying the user's manual, I never did use most of its functionality. After about 1/2 hour playing with the VU, I feel right at home. It's a good feeling. People I've shown the phone to have said, "I want one of those!" Before buying, I compared the phone with the Samsung Eternity (a867). It was about $80 more expensive, and I couldn't see any obvious advantages. For $80, I want to have an "I want that!" experience. I didn't. Mainly, I'm delighted with my choice. I say 'Mainly' because, once I got it home, I ran into an unexpected brick wall. My life is contained in Microsoft Outlook, and, now that I feel comfortable using it, I want to sync my contacts and calendar with my VU. Uh-oh! It was one of those "forgot to ask the sales person" moments. It can't (effectively) be done. Checking online, I found people generally complaining that LG had created a proprietary architecture for this phone that just wouldn't sync. Apparently Data Pilot is working on this problem, but they don't know when (if ever) the problem will be solved. This was such an issue for me that I actually called the store back to discuss an exchange. I would have HATED to trade this phone in (even after only 3 days), but not EVER having sync capabilities? It was a real toss-up. It would have cost me about $100 extra to upgrade to the Samsung ($20 'restocking' charge), and I really had to ask myself if the sync problem was worth losing the phone AND $100. Fortunately, it wasn't entirely an either/or choice. The phone WILL receive contacts and calender appointments from Outlook over the Bluetooth connection . . . only just one at a time. The non-sync situation turns out to be more of an inconvenience than a make-or-break. I've given up my search for a solution (although I'm keeping my eyes and ears open) for the time being, and have just settled in to enjoying the VU. |
